Doukhobor Textile Archival Collection

Since its formation in 2000, the USCC Cultural Interpretive Society has grown to encompass many ideals and beliefs of the Doukhobor culture.  Not only do the members reflect on the historical lifestyle by learning the fibre art skills such as shawl embroidery, sewing,  traditional woolen comforter quilting, knitting, crocheting and loom weaving, we recognized a need to start documenting existing fabric artifacts so that information about our rich culture can be shared with generations that follow.

This project, the Doukhobor Textile Collection Accession, was made possible through grant funding from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Culture and Heritage Funding Programs (2015 and 2016).        

The goals of this two phase project was to scan our large collection of heritage/vintage traditional Doukhobor clothing and textiles, to assess the integrity of the artifacts and to organize the collection into a manageable presentation – both physical storage and database.  Ultimately, the final goal was reached with the creation of the online version of the database using the Museum Archive Software (Musarch). Documenting the whole collection continues to be  a work-in-progress, whereas many items have already been  posted and available for viewing.
